This book of Cady Noland has two volumes and could easily be considered as a follow up of ‘No Land’ (2018), an unauthorized collection of copied writings about Cady Noland with reproductions of magazine and catalogue clippings; a piracy publication.
However, here the content of ‘The Clip-on Method’ is obviously documented with the aim to put emphasis on more verbal critical statements about ethical aspects in recent history of the United States, such as racism, dubious goals in politics and industry, use and abuse of scientific knowledge, manipulations of power. That makes this book more than just a collection of images of works by Cady Noland, and together with the 2-3 white pages notably inserted here and there in both volumes makes this publication an artist’s book. It is used by the artist as a means to make a point, opposite to mere documenting art works.
The second volume contains a text “Notes for 1989 Show” published in Balcon no. 4 written by Cady Noland, next to photos of works.
In a book report by Jason Pickleman in Chicago Gallery News a lucid and precise analysis is made of the two volumes of ‘The Clip-on Method’. Really an enlighting loose text.

The regular edition was published in soft cover opposite to this signed and numbered edition of 35 that is cloth bound. Inside small photographs of people are depicted accompanied by speculative texts about their behaviour, actions, backgrounds, and identities, investigating assumptions on both a personal level as well as relations between image and text.

Originally these four publications were issued by Hans Jörg Mayer in 1974-1978. In 1991 a second run as reprints issued by Dieter Roth Verlag were included in Volume 35 being part of ‘Dieter Roth Gesammelte Werke’.

This booklet was purchased at Other Books and So in Amsterdam that was owned and run by Ulises Carrión. At the top right corner of the cover Ulises made notes in pencil about the price (Dfl. 1,-) and from whom the copies were taken in stock, here 8x ‘car’ in total. As such this copy has a special touch of archival history.
Gibbs’s first solo exhibition after having moved to Amsterdam was “Extinction” which was held from March 26 to April 6, 1974 in In-Out Center. It was closely related to the theme ‘language operations’ of his concrete and visual poetry, for which this booklet was published. He used photomontage superimposing an alphabet that becomes energized while obliterated by a fire extinguisher. For that action a polystyrene and hardboard template of the alphabet was doused in petrol, set on fire, and put out with an extinguisher by the artist. The same year Gibbs performed ‘Extinction’ life on 21 november 1974 at de Jan van Eyck Akademie in Maastricht.

In the seventies Kristján Gudmundsson lived with his family in a large appartement in the Daniel Stalpaertstraat in Amsterdam. He produced more than a few books and “Ef/If” was one of his hand made artist’s books published by Silver Press, founded and owned by himself in Reykjavík, Iceland.
The complete book is in screen print, also the printed text on tracing paper that introduces the concept of the book: Ef staer∂ þessarar si∂u táknar ibúafjölda jar∂arinnar, þá tákna hringarnir ibúi Kina, Tanzaníu of Íslands.
If the size of this page represents the number of people in the world, then the circles represent the people of China, Tanzania and Iceland.
The works of Kristján Gudmundsson invite to contemplate on his method of working related to what his art encompasses. Usually texts on his works contain either personal memories or chronological summery. In fact, in many works he attempts time by time again to capture factual data into hand sized works, like here in this thin booklet that contains the amount of inhabitants of China, Tanzania and Iceland. In the middle of the last page a tiny bright white screen printed (sic) dot of 1 mm diameter may be detected, when exposed to strong daylight.
Right from the start the production of the book caused problems. In order to keep the costs low the text was prepared for the printer through adhesive letters, hence the dancing letters on the title page. The running direction of paper was not taken into account which caused waving binding. The very thin tracing paper of the first page stuck to the screen when printed. And the most problematic part of the book was the white circular dot of less than 1 millimeter on the last page; with a magnifying glass the print had to be checked every time, and more than quite often no dot at all could be detected; again a misprint or in fact no print. Not being well provided with enough production money Kristján Gudmundsson soon stopped the printing of the book.
A very fragile and extremely difficult book to find; in Kristján Gudmundsson’s catalogues and monographs this book is always overlooked. Therefore, by now it may be considered almost as a unique work of art. KvG
