Valérie Belin’s (1964) photographs objects, such as glasses, silverware, Venetian mirrors, car motors, or animal carcasses. And also portraits. The concept of her method is simple; taking a photograph is a matter of light and exposure, then the subject seems to change of character.
The portrait photograph ‘Black Woman II’ by Valérie Belin shows a young woman with a remarkably smooth face. How is it possible that someone is made up so smoothly. Later I was told that this is the head of a mannequin made up as faithfully as possible as a human being. Every time I look at it I must try hard to see it as a doll with a wig and face paint. Odd. For decades David Hammons consciously avoided the attention of critics, galleries, and museums. Meanwhile he preferred “doing things in the street.” In 1997 I visited Jack Tilton Gallery in New York. At the back office ‘hidden’ on the top of a cupboard an evocative elephant’s dung decorated with beads and the like was put there ‘for sale’, i.e. not really fanatically, so to say. Nowadays David Hammons’ works are highly estimated and part of What’s on in the arts. KvG

Hi,
After a year of itinerant studios in free residences, I’ve re-started my studio rent edition series. If you don’t know this, they are a series of monthly editions that subsidizes my monthly studio rent. They are all an edition of 10 and sold for 1/10th of my studio rent. I’ve done this for years. Most of previous ones are sold out (some are available at my gallery in Berlin). Each month I send out an email describing the new piece, and you can purchase one, and it is then mailed to ou. Maybe this series could also be seen a a monthly mail art project as well. I’ve stopped posting info online, just sending their descriptions through emails like this, to keep things more ephemeral.

This booklet was purchased at Other Books and So in Amsterdam that was owned and run by Ulises Carrión. At the top right corner of the cover Ulises made notes in pencil about the price (Dfl. 1,-) and from whom the copies were taken in stock, here 8x ‘car’ in total. As such this copy has a special touch of archival history.
Gibbs’s first solo exhibition after having moved to Amsterdam was “Extinction” which was held from March 26 to April 6, 1974 in In-Out Center. It was closely related to the theme ‘language operations’ of his concrete and visual poetry, for which this booklet was published. He used photomontage superimposing an alphabet that becomes energized while obliterated by a fire extinguisher. For that action a polystyrene and hardboard template of the alphabet was doused in petrol, set on fire, and put out with an extinguisher by the artist. The same year Gibbs performed ‘Extinction’ life on 21 november 1974 at de Jan van Eyck Akademie in Maastricht.
