CORINNE VIONNET, Souvenirs d’un glacier, 2019
22 x 33 cm
offset, cover and pages of thick cardboard, 12 pp.
Lumbeck binding
edition 200
published by RRose Editions, Paris, France
Over the years, Corinne Vionnet has collected postcards of the Rhône glacier, spanning almost of century of images. The pictures have all been shot from the same perspective, from an “ideal” spot that reveals the glacier in its archetypal form and the roads that takes visitors there – as is often the case with touristic attractions. It is a pattern of repetition and superposition that Corinne Vionnet explored for instance in her Photo Opportunities series.
GERHARD RICHTER, Tote bag, 2019 – number 2
18 x 18 inches
tote bag, dye print on polyester fibre
published by FineArtAmerica.com
produced by PX Pixels, Corporate Headquarters, Chicago, IL, USA
p.o.r.
Fine Art America is a company comparable to RedBuble Pty Ltd that was founded in 2006 as a global online marketplace for print-on-demand products. In 2007, Broihier launched Fine Art America, also an ecommerce marketplace. Artists upload digital images of their artwork to fineartamerica.com and offer them for sale as frame prints, canvas prints, greeting cards and more. Once a purchase is made, Fine Art America outsources the printing, framing, matting, stretching, packaging, shipping and insuring.
FineArtAmerica.com sells not only in-the-style-of, but also merchandised 2 patterns (details of a painting) that are offered as ‘by Gerhard Richter’, i.e. both 2 Throw pillows and 2 Tote bags. That brings one to the question whether Gerhard Richter or his team ‘uploaded digital images of artworks to fineartamerica.com’ or that e.g. Fine Art America got a license to publish and produce this product.
For some reason on the Tote bags number 2 and 3 no reference can found related to Gerhard Richter’s name, consent or authorisation. KvG, 28 October 2019
When one is looking for Richter’s Tote bags produced by various companies none of these bags are for sale anymore. Instead of making clear whether a product is an authentic item made with the consent of Richter, nowadays Tote bags are printed with squeegee reproductions designed by designers obviously inspired by the paintings of Gerhard Richter. This all makes the Tote bag number 2 a peculiar collector’s item. KvG, 17 March 2021

This issue of Rubber bulletin is entirely made on and by Ulises Carrión. It is one of the most important publications that reveal specifically his theories and practical thoughts about ink stamping in the visual arts. With short statements he comes to innovative points of view:
‘Every print of a rubber-stamp implies a choice by the artist. He creates not only when he designs his rubber-stamp, but also everytime he makes a print.’
‘In contrast with other means of reproduction – photography, for instance – rubber-stamps are associated with power.
Artists’ rubber-stamps reminds us of those other rubber-stamps that actually control and direct our lives.’ (p.7)
On the inner side of the cover a date stamp ’39 JAN 1988’ is depicted. This ink stamp refers to his concept of “Artists Work for the Future”. Through his choices of appropriation like homages, references, quotations, parodies and allusions he touches the notion of the worn out past and overestimated trends. Ink stamping is one of the media that can generate an interesting impetus to overcome clichés and open up unexplored territories today and in the future. In this sense ‘Artists work for the future’.
Ulises Carrión (1941-1989) was an artist, editor, curator, gallerist, archivist and theorist of the post-1970s avant-garde.
